Christmas Recap! Family / Fitness / Life

I haven’t updated recently because we went on vacation to visit my family for Christmas! We drove up on Tuesday morning and stayed until yesterday morning.

The drive to Atlanta was long and boring. I made sure to pack some healthy snacks, though! I packed some Powercrunch bars, chocolate rice cakes, and peanut butter. It’s really easy to eat poorly while on the road so it’s important to plan ahead!

Once we got settled at my parents house, we went to Atlantic Station to go ice skating. I didn’t skate because I had M in her wrap, but it was still so fun watching my dad and sisters skate! After skating, we went to a restaurant called Yard House and it was amazing! I loved all the different food options. There were so many different combinations of flavors that I hadn’t seen before. I wanted to try one of everything! We all split a few appetizers and I got a pastrami benedict burger (yes, that is as good as it sounds!).

Wednesday morning I went to the gym with my mom and we worked shoulders and back with her trainer. After the gym, we spent Wednesday lounging around and taking family photos. I also went to Target to pick up a last minute Christmas Eve dress for M. The one I brought was too small. She’s getting so big! On Thursday, Mike and I went to the YMCA and played racquetball and it was so much fun! We were there for an hour and had such a great time! Racquetball is a great workout.  We spent the rest of the day relaxing before going to Waffle House for dinner- a tradition- and going to the 11pm Christmas Eve service at my parents church.

Christmas Day was a blast as well! We opened presents and had a delicious meal. I got a lot of great gifts! One of my favorite gifts was from my sister. She knows that I’ve really been enjoying cooking lately so she got me some cookbooks with a bunch of healthy, simple recipes. I can’t wait to start trying some of them this week! Side note: how cute is M!?!

We spent Friday and Saturday lounging around the house (are you sensing a theme here?). Mike and I went to the YMCA again on Saturday to play racquetball again and had a ton of fun. I also worked legs that day. We also met up with my friend Becca for brunch and my friend Meghan for dinner! I hadn’t seen either of them in almost a year so it was awesome to catch up!

On Sunday, we relaxed, went to Trader Joe’s, went to a family friends house for an engagement party, then Monday we drove home!

We had such a good trip. I don’t see my family very often usually, so it was nice to spend some time with them. I’ve seen them more this year than the past few years combined, mostly due to M being born. Now that everything has settled down, I’m not sure when I’ll see them next. Life is kind of starting back up again with me going back to work next week (more on that at another time) so it will be interesting to see how and where things fall into place.

What did you do during the holiday vacation?

4th of July Weekend // Orlando! Life

affiliatelinkdisclaimer

I hope everyone had a fun and safe 4th of July weekend!

We went out of town to visit some friends in Orlando and we had so much fun! Both of us had Friday off of work, so we left on Friday morning.

On the way out of town, we stopped at a new-ish gas station near our house. Enmark has rebranded their gas station as EnMarket.  In addition to the normal gas station food you find anywhere, they had a ton of local and organic snack choices. They also had a restaurant with made to order sandwiches and pizzas. I was glad to see some better options! I had a bite of Mike’s chicken biscuit (which was SO good) but I stuck to my choices: a fruit cup and a Cookies and Cream Quest Bar. To be honest, I was shocked they had Quest Bars! I also got a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough bar for a snack.

The drive to Orlando wasn’t horrible. It’s about 4 1/2 hours. We got to our friends house and went to Downtown Disney for dinner. We went to Bongos and the food was amazing! I should have taken a picture (I ate it too fast). It’s a Cuban restaurant and they did Cuban food right, for the most part. Their chimichurri was different (red instead of green) but it was still really good!

Fun fact about Carrie: sweet plantains are one of my FAVORITE foods. Mike likes tostones (flattened and fried- savory) more  and I think he’s insane. Give me all the sweet plantains!

The next day, we spent the day by the pool. My friend Casey made a casserole for breakfast. I’m going to use the recipe she gave me and make some substitutions to make it a little healthier. She’s a pretty healthy eater in the first place, but we didn’t make any substitutions for the cheese. I may try Laughing Cow and see how it works! For lunch, her husband made some chicken (I think it was in a lime marinade?) and hot dogs. I had chicken and it was really good.

That night, we drove to another friend’s house in downtown Orlando for dinner and fireworks. We watched fireworks from the rooftop of her apartment and we were able to see the fireworks from all of the theme parks at the same time!

Sunday, we went to a restaurant called Yellow Dog Eats for lunch. Mike and I ate there a couple years ago on a drive down to Miami. We remembered it being amazing, so we decided to go back. It was AWESOME.

We both got the sandwich called “The Rufus.” It was pulled pork, a Carolina style barbecue sauce, raspberry sauce, brie cheese, some peppers that were savory and a little spicy, and I added bacon to mine. Mike added bacon and shoestring potatoes to his. Let me tell you something: this place is amazing. The food is incredible. Is it healthy? Hell no. But it is so worth it! The vibe of the place is great and we will make this a place we go whenever we are in Orlando.

After eating, we went back to the house, packed the car, and headed back home. Traffic was miserable, we got stuck in a hurricane (not literally, but it was raining so hard we couldn’t see out the window- 35mph with hazards on for almost 20 minutes), and we were told the power may have been out at our house. Luckily, the power was NOT out, and we made it home at 6:59- just in time to watch the U.S. Women’s National Team win the World Cup! Not a bad way to end the weekend!

Overall, we had a great weekend!

My Favorite Things // February Life

affiliatelinkdisclaimer

I cannot believe that February is almost over! I feel like it was just New Years and here we are, almost into March. February is always such a sweet month and there were so many awesome things that I did and tried.

After reflecting on the month, I realized that I’ve sort of forgotten all of the great things from previous months. Because of that, I wanted to start a new segment on the blog that highlights some of my favorite things each month. I think it will be a good way to reflect on the positive things from the month and it will also give me a chance to share about new products (or old products) that I used and loved!

I already have lists of my favorite things (accessories, apparel, and supplements), but I think doing it monthly and expanding on why things were my favorite will be really fun!

Each month will consist of 3 parts:

Favorite Thing
Favorite Moment
Favorite Food

So, right now, let’s start with February Favorites!

favorites

Favorite Thing| Quest Nutrition Products

While Quest bars are usually always on my favorite things list, they were especially useful this month. With all the traveling I did, I really depended on Quest products to keep me on track. For example, I traveled from 3:00 until about 8:00 on my way to New York and I never had time to get something to eat. It would have been really easy to grab some chips from the airport, but I packed some Quest bars and some Quest chips so I didn’t have to be limited to whatever the convenience stores had. I got enough protein to keep me full until I was able to get a late dinner (it was 10:00 before I ate!) and I was able to “cheat clean” as Quest likes to say. +1 for Quest bars in February!

Favorite Moment| New York City

It’s no surprise that my favorite moment of February was traveling to New York City for Valentine’s day. The view from our place was amazing, I got to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, I ate amazing food from Shake Shack, Carlos Bakery, and Katz Deli, and I got my picture taken by Humans of New York at the Met. It was such an amazing trip! I had been to New York twice before this trip, but this was the first time I went that I was able to explore the city on my own terms and I really fell in love with the city during this trip. I can’t wait to go back (in the spring or summer time) and see more!

Favorite Food| Eggs Benedict

February was the month of the eggs benedict. Nearly every time we went to brunch, I got eggs benedict. Something about it just makes my heart really happy. It’s such a comfort food. I also ate the best eggs benedict I’ve ever had this month. North Beach Bar and Grill on Tybee Island, Ga added smoked salmon to their benedict and took away the bread. SO good.

Protein Packed Vanilla Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie + Summit Nutritions Whey Protein Review Fitness

After back to back weekends out of town, I am seriously feeling the sluggish effects of eating poorly. Last week, I had a tough time getting back on track after New York City and then last weekend I went to Atlanta to surprise my mom for her birthday. We went to a restaurant called McKendrick’s. It’s a really nice steakhouse and the food was AMAZING. They had this lobster mac n cheese that was to DIE for.

On Sunday, I met up with Becca for brunch at J. Cristophers. I got the Eggs Cristopher. It was like an eggs benedict, but it had tomato, bacon, and turkey. Based on my history with brunch, it’s obvious that I love eggs benedict.

eggs benedict

The weekend was a lot of fun, but I was so stuffed full of rich and delicious food that I felt so blah.

I decided to come at this week hard, so I started the week off with a delicious smoothie. It was a protein packed vanilla peanut butter banana smoothie and it was AMAZING.

peanut butter protein shake

All I used was 1 packet of Summit Nutritions 100% Pure Whey Protein Isolate in Vanilla Alpine flavor, 1 cup of vanilla almond milk, 2 tbs of dry PB2, and 1 banana.

protein shake 1wm

Summit Nutritions sent me some of their protein to try in exchange for an honest review so I decided to mix it into a couple of smoothies.

Summit Nutritions 100% Pure Whey Protein Isolate is a protein powder that has far less carbs and fat and the same amount of protein as other protein powder brands. It is gluten-free, lactose-free, has no GMO’s, and it is sweetened with Stevia.

I tried it mixed with 8 oz of water and, honestly, I wasn’t a fan. It is incredibly good for you, but the taste isn’t very strong. You would need to mix it with milk or almond milk. It IS however, amazing in smoothies. It has a faint sweet taste and is perfect for sweetening up a smoothie and adding a ton of protein.

I would definitely purchase this product again simply because it is a great way to add a lot of protein to something drastically changing the taste of what you’re trying to make. I think it would be great in iced coffee (NOT HOT- The whey will bake- YUCK).

Overall, I’d give this product a 7/10.  It didn’t knock my socks off, but there were definitely more pro’s than con’s!

Do you use protein powders in your smoothies?

New York City! Life

This past weekend I went to New York City and it was a blast! So many fun experiences and great food. Good thing we walked a lot! I have a feeling NYC is overall a very heart healthy city- I walked 7-8 miles every day I was there!

On Friday, I took a plane to NYC and landed at JFK. I was really nervous about navigating my way into Manhattan alone, but I managed just fine. I had to ask someone where the AirTrain station was because there weren’t too many signs in my terminal, but once I got on the AirTrain it was smooth sailing. After getting off the AirTrain, I paid for my ticket (you pay for the trip at your station- I got off at Jamaica Station) and then headed toward the E train toward the World Trade Center.

When I got to the World Trade Center stop, Mike was waiting for me to walk us to the place we were staying. The view was amazing! new york view

Shortly after, we met up with a childhood friend of mine for dinner. We hadn’t seen each other in almost 8 years so it was great to catch up and see her!

The next morning (Valentine’s Day!) we went to a cute cafe close to our place. I got a bagel with cream cheese and Mike got a sausage, egg, and cheese croissant sandwich. The sandwiches looked so good! They had one made with french toast!

After breakfast, we got on the R train and went to Times Square. Times Square is amazing, if you’ve never been. I think everyone should see it once in their life. We walked through Times Square and got tickets to Phantom of the Opera from the TKTS station.

After getting tickets, we went to a sushi buffet called Ichi Umi. This place is SO good. The scallops were so fresh, they were brought in from a local bay that morning!

After lunch, we went back to Times Square so we could head to the Majestic Theater on Broadway. Seeing Phantom of the Opera has always been something I wanted to do. I saw it in San Francisco when I was a
kid, but I don’t remember much. I’ve always loved the show and I was SO excited to be able to see it on Broadway!

Screen Shot 2015-02-16 at 7.32.45 PM

It was amazing! When we left the theater it was SNOWING!! It never snows in Savannah, so it was so cool to be able to see snow!

After the show, we went to the new Carlos Bakery location near Times Square.

We got some pastries and then we went to dinner at Chevy’s- a childhood favorite of mine that I haven’t had since moving from California 10 years ago.

After Chevy’s we went back to our place, took a nap, and went to a bar called The Royal near Union Square to watch the Slam Dunk Competition.

On Sunday, we woke up and ate breakfast at the same cafe and headed to Central Park. It was SO cold!  central park

We wanted to walk through the Central Park to get to the Met, but it was so cold we couldn’t even think, so we hailed a cab and got a ride to the Met. The Met was amazing! I loved seeing all the history and all the modern art.

Screen Shot 2015-02-16 at 7.41.53 PM

After the Met, we went to eat at Katz Deli. The sandwich was so good but it was huge! We split a sandwich before we went back to our place, took a nap, and packed up to get ready to go.

After we packed, we went to Grand Central Terminal and ate at Shake Shack. Grand Central Terminal is another location that everyone should see. It’s gorgeous! When we were done eating, we got a bus ride to LaGuardia and then flew back.

It was probably one of the best vacations I’ve been on. Even though it was short, we did so much and had so much fun!

I also got a ton of walking in! Check out my FitBit stats for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!

Eating Light at a Sunday Beach Brunch Fitness / Life

After a Saturday filled with yard work and house chores, Mike and I decided to head to the beach for brunch on this morning. We live about 30 minutes from Tybee Island, though we don’t go there as often as we probably should. I want to make a point to go the beach more often this year. It was 70 degrees and it was the perfect weather for a beach front brunch.

The drive there was great. No traffic and just warm enough to let the windows down.

reflection-1wm

We went to a little restaurant called North Beach Bar and Grill. It’s a small place (with surprisingly adequate seating) in a more residential area of the island and it is walking distance to a public dock that goes right to the beach. Usually they serve burgers and seafood, but on Sunday mornings they serve brunch. The menu was small but everything looked amazing.

menu-1wm

Eating light at brunch isn’t always easy, but I made it a priority to find a wholesome meal. I ordered the Smoked Salmon benedict. It came with smoked salmon, sliced tomatoes, bacon, poached eggs, chive hollandaise, and home fries (a hash). Mike ordered the Jamaican French Toast which was two HUGE pieces of  Challah bread made like french toast. Mike and I also split an order of their gorgonzola grits. The smoked salmon benedict was seriously one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. It was perfect. The salmon brought the perfect amount of savory to the whole dish and I also liked that there wasn’t an overload of hollandaise.

When looking at the menu and trying to get something lighter, I made sure to stay away from things with bread. Bread is delicious and  I DO eat bread, but I will avoid it if I can. I picked this dish because of the insane amount of protein in it. Eggs and salmon and bacon? That is a LOT of protein. It definitely kept me full during the day.

foodwm

Eating out doesn’t have to be a bummer! Pick something high in protein and enjoy yourself. If you really want to try something that you can’t find anywhere else (like the gorgonzola grits) get an order of it and share!

After brunch, Mike and I took a walk on the beach and enjoyed the weather.
