I Think We Should Take a Break Fitness

This post is honestly mostly for me to sort out my thoughts, but I know I’m not the only one who’s going through what I’m going through so I thought I’d make it a blog post.

If you’ve been following me on my other social media accounts, you know that my weight loss isn’t exactly going well. Not from my lack of trying, either. I ate at a calorie goal and did well, then it stalled. Then I switched it up and started eating a more plant based diet. GAINED weight. Gave the plant based thing some more time since it can be a big adjustment for your body. Nope. Still a gain. The other day, I mentioned eating based on the IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros) method and I started logging yesterday and today. Epic failure.

I know what you’re thinking. I couldn’t have possibly seen results from 2 days of IIFYM. You’re right! The reason it was an epic failure was because of how time consuming figuring all that out was. On top of being time consuming, I was started to get irritated at the lack of flexibility there was. Sure, you can eat to fit your macros, but if you don’t have a ton of calories to work with, there is very little flexibility.

That’s when I realized: why the fluff am I trying to go through all of this trouble? What is the point? What is my end-game and what is the long term plan?

To answer those fairly quickly:

  • I want to look good.
  • The point is to look good after having a baby.
  • The end game is to look good.
  • The long term plan is to look good.

See the problem?

I am so focused on wanting to look good that I am completely ignoring all of the OTHER things (and frankly, more important things) my body can do.

Before I get a bunch of  “I told you so’s” hear me out.

It is ingrained in us to like what we see. We want people to like what they see when they look at us. And that’s not a bad thing some times. What IS a bad thing is when the focus and the priority of your day is looking good. I will be the first to admit that, over the past few weeks, that has been my focus. I still go through my daily routine and I completed the tasks I need to complete. I’m a good wife and a good mom. Outside of those priorities, though, my brain was 100% focused on what I could do to look better. I hated my body.

In church today, I was thinking about the past couple weeks and how I’ve just been bummed out and depressed because of my lack of progress. That’s when I got hit like a ton of bricks.

wonderfullymade

Me hating my body is telling God that I hate the body he gave me. It’s me saying the work he did to create me before I was even a thought is worthless and garbage. I am made in His image and hating my own body is like hating Him. Let that kick you in the gut for a minute.

It would be like someone painting a piece of art specifically for you just for you to focus all day on the fact that you hate it. In reality, it’s a piece of art that was wonderfully made. It’s made up of all the same things as other paintings- paint, canvas, brush strokes- but it has a different look that is totally it’s own and it is beautiful.

Truth be told, the body I have is NOT garbage. My body can do amazing things. I can run, jump, squat, press, and climb. It carried, grew, and kept a baby alive before it brought that baby into the world. It can run on no sleep efficiently and it can recharge when it needs to. Does it look the way I would like it to? No. And I don’t think it ever will. But I am learning that that’s ok. I am NOT an elite athlete or a physique or bikini competitor. I don’t model. I don’t have a job that requires me to look a certain way so I don’t need to look the way the way people who have those jobs do.

All of this being said, being happy with my body is not an excuse to not take care of it. I was given this body for a reason, so I need to take care of it the best I can. In my case, that does mean I need to lose a few pounds. Those pounds don’t have to be gone overnight, however. I don’t need to do anything crazy to lose that weight. I don’t need to spend hours at the gym or count my calories or be strict on my macros. Those things will make me look good, but how long can I actually keep that up? 1 month? 6 months? 1 year? Certainly not forever. All I need to do is find balance. Make healthy choices. Stay active. Go back to basics. Those things can be made into lifelong habits.

I have been counting calories/macros for 5 years. 5 YEARS. I know what’s good for me and what isn’t. I know healthy habits. I just need to put them into practice. That’s why, macros and calorie counting, I think we need a break.

Laptop Lunches Bentoware // Review + Giveaway! Fitness

sponsored post I am really excited today! This weekend was amazing. We hung out with friends and spent some time outside at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens. We saw some of the most amazing flowers there! There is a green house full of orchids and a lot of them were blooming (spiking, I think, is the correct term for orchids- I’ll have to ask my dad, he’s an orchid expert).

orchids

They were gorgeous.

We ate out at restaurants a LOT this weekend, though, and I am so ready to get back into my regular routine.

Part of my routine is making lunch for work and it can be difficult sometimes. Portions can be tricky and too often I say “forget it” and end up going out to lunch when I really shouldn’t. Queue: Laptop Lunches Bentoware.

Laptop Lunches is a company that designs bento style lunch boxes. When they sent me some of their product for review, I was so excited! I’ve had a couple of lunch boxes like this before, but this one was the easiest to use by far.

bentoware

Each box can hold something different and you can include all, some, or none of the inserts in your laptop lunch, depending on what you want to pack! It is really versatile and it is easy to pack into a purse or a backpack. I was able to fit this into my purse along with all the other stuff I carry without any issues!

Some of the inserts have lids and others don’t. I put carrots and blueberries in the lid-less ones and never had any issues with anything falling out. The bento box is very well designed.

I thought it was really cool that there was a space to write your name. This is especially handy if you have kids and use it for their lunches! No more getting things mixed up between siblings or classmates.

Another bonus: the bento box and the pieces inside are all dishwasher safe! I put all of my pieces in the top rack of the dishwasher.

I found that the days I used my bentobox, I made much healthier choices. I stuck to what I packed in the box and I was satiated with the portions I had available to me. This is definitely a product you should have in your house!

I can make it a lot easier for you to have one in your house too! Laptop Lunches is being gracious enough to give one reader their own set of Bentoware! You will get everything you see pictured here! All you need to do is:

  • Head over to Laptop Lunches’ website and browse through their products.
  • Comment on this post with the item you’d like to try the most.

You can also visit Laptop Lunches Facebook page for an extra entry. Like it, if you get a chance!

This giveaway is for US residents only. The contest is open until Thursday night, 11:59pm EST and I will randomly select a winner on Friday, March 13!

Good Luck!

Protein Packed Vanilla Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie + Summit Nutritions Whey Protein Review Fitness

After back to back weekends out of town, I am seriously feeling the sluggish effects of eating poorly. Last week, I had a tough time getting back on track after New York City and then last weekend I went to Atlanta to surprise my mom for her birthday. We went to a restaurant called McKendrick’s. It’s a really nice steakhouse and the food was AMAZING. They had this lobster mac n cheese that was to DIE for.

On Sunday, I met up with Becca for brunch at J. Cristophers. I got the Eggs Cristopher. It was like an eggs benedict, but it had tomato, bacon, and turkey. Based on my history with brunch, it’s obvious that I love eggs benedict.

The weekend was a lot of fun, but I was so stuffed full of rich and delicious food that I felt so blah.

I decided to come at this week hard, so I started the week off with a delicious smoothie. It was a protein packed vanilla peanut butter banana smoothie and it was AMAZING.

All I used was 1 packet of Summit Nutritions 100% Pure Whey Protein Isolate in Vanilla Alpine flavor, 1 cup of vanilla almond milk, 2 tbs of dry PB2, and 1 banana.

Summit Nutritions sent me some of their protein to try in exchange for an honest review so I decided to mix it into a couple of smoothies.

Summit Nutritions 100% Pure Whey Protein Isolate is a protein powder that has far less carbs and fat and the same amount of protein as other protein powder brands. It is gluten-free, lactose-free, has no GMO’s, and it is sweetened with Stevia.

I tried it mixed with 8 oz of water and, honestly, I wasn’t a fan. It is incredibly good for you, but the taste isn’t very strong. You would need to mix it with milk or almond milk. It IS however, amazing in smoothies. It has a faint sweet taste and is perfect for sweetening up a smoothie and adding a ton of protein.

I would definitely purchase this product again simply because it is a great way to add a lot of protein to something drastically changing the taste of what you’re trying to make. I think it would be great in iced coffee (NOT HOT- The whey will bake- YUCK).

Overall, I’d give this product a 7/10.  It didn’t knock my socks off, but there were definitely more pro’s than con’s!

Do you use protein powders in your smoothies?

Slow Cooker Recipes for Beginners // Review + Giveaway! Fitness

slow cooker recipes for beginners

The Crock Pot is probably one of the best inventions ever. When days are busy, it’s a lifesaver to be able to throw some ingredients in the crock pot and let it turn into dinner during the work day.

I’ve made a few crock pot meals this week and they’ve all be amazing!

On Monday, I made shredded Spicy Barbecue Chicken. It was super easy! I just threw frozen chicken into the crock pot with about ¼  cup barbecue sauce, ¼ cup sweet chili sauce, and ¼ cup wing sauce. I cooked it on high for 6 hours, shredded it, then added some more barbecue sauce before putting it on buns. It was so good!

The issue with a crockpot, to me, was lack of variety. I was either making pulled something, chili, or soup. Very rarely did I ever make anything other than that. When Antares Press sent me their cookbook Slow Cooker Recipes for Beginners in exchange for a review, I was really excited! Pinterest has a TON of great recipes for a crockpot, but there are so many that it can get overwhelming.

I made a couple recipes from this cookbook and I was very impressed! The first one, Creamy Mexican Chicken, had 4 ingredients and was incredibly easy. It tasted really good, too! I put mine in tortillas and we had plenty leftover for lunches. It was good without any tortillas as well.

The second meal I made was the Bacon Ranch Chicken. I wasn’t sure about this one because it calls for cream of chicken soup and peas. I omitted the peas and kept the cream of chicken soup even though I’m not a huge fan of it. This dish was actually really good as well! We ate ours on sandwiches, but you could definitely serve it with a veggie on the side.

I honestly probably picked the two most boring recipes out of the book because I had to use the ingredients I had on hand but there are so many amazing recipes in this cookbook and I can’t wait to try more of them!

Some of those recipes include:

  • Cranberry Turkey Meatballs
  • Curried Chicken Breasts
  • Balsamic Almonds
  • Thai Chicken Soup
  • Tex-Mex Chicken Stew
  • Pepper Venison Steak
  • Cheese Ravioli
  • Ratatouille
  • Mashed Sweet Potatoes
  • Chocolate Mousse
  • Cheesecake
  • Cinnamon Apples
  • and a TON more!

I would love for you to try some of these recipes with me, so I am giving away 5 copies of the eBook! You don’t have to have a Kindle to read the eBook. You can download the free Kindle reader app on your smartphone. If you have a nook or other reader, don’t worry! I have those formats as well.

You can get entered to win by going to the Keeping Carrie Fit Facebook page, find the giveaway post (it will be pinned to the top of the page), and comment with the recipe from the list above that you want to try most!

The contest will end on Monday, February 23rd and the winners will be announced the next day!

Yoga Class // Kiss Me Organics Matcha Powder Review // Matcha Cookies Recipe! Fitness

Tonight I went to a yoga class and it was AWESOME. I used to do yoga on Saturday mornings with my mom, but that was 10 years ago and I haven’t gone to a real class since then. I’ve practiced yoga at home on and off but I really started practicing daily over the past couple of weeks. I’m no yoga expert, but I enjoy doing it at night to wind down before bed. On my own, I’ll practice a few series of asanas (poses), but it’s hard because I only know so many! I have some yoga apps that are helpful, but I wanted to get in an actual class, so I did!

I was nervous at first because it had been so long since my last class. I brought my own mat but there were mats to use if someone didn’t have their own. I didn’t know what to expect regarding shoes because yoga is generally practiced barefoot, but I wasn’t sure if that was going to be allowed since it was in a gym. Luckily, we were allowed to go barefoot (like I said, I used my own mat).

The class was about an hour long and included poses that I was familiar with and some that I wasn’t. It was nice to be led rather than trying to make it up as I went along.

Overall I really enjoyed it!

matcha latte

When I got home, I enjoyed a delicious green tea latte made with Kiss Me Organics Green Tea Matcha Powder. Kiss Me Organics sent me some of their Matcha powder to try in exchange for an honest review. I mentioned this product on Facebook earlier because I made cookies with it. This stuff is awesome.

Matcha is finely milled green tea. It comes in powder form. Matcha is said to have significantly more benefits than regular green tea because matcha is processed in a much different way than green tea. Matcha is said to improve focus and energy without any violent crash, improve metabolic speed (which green tea is known for anyways- matcha just improves it more), and some have said that it has helped clear their skin.

I have only been using it a couple of days, so I can’t speak on the metabolism or skin claims, but I have noticed that I am more able to focus on the tasks at hand after drinking green tea lattes I have made with Kiss Me Organics matcha. It is really easy to make a latte, too! Just add hot milk, whisk until frothy, and add sweetener if you’d like (I wouldn’t make it without sweetener but that’s a personal preference. I used Stevia for my matcha latte).

What’s awesome about matcha is the versatility. I made cookies with it! It was really easy and the matcha powder didn’t change the texture of the dough at all.

Matcha Cookies
(adapted from SparkPeople)

Makes about 24 cookies

Ingredients:

2 eggs
3/4 c vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla
3/4 c sugar
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp Kiss Me Organics Organic Matcha

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
2. In a bowl, sift together all dry ingredients
3. In a smaller bowl, mix together all wet ingredients.
4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ones and stir together until it is thoroughly mixed.
5. Spray a cookie sheet with non-stick spray (I use Pam).
6. Form dough into balls and place on the cookie sheet.
7. Bake for 7-9 minutes (the bottom edges will turn golden)
8. Let cool and enjoy!

Overall, I was very pleased with Kiss Me Organics Organic Matcha powder. I can’t wait to try it in other things! I think it would be great in protein pancakes and smoothies.

Have you ever tried matcha? What do you think of it?
