24 Week Bump Update! Family

I’ve missed a few weeks of these, but here’s a bump update! It’s been a busy couple of weeks, but here we go!

  • How far along? 24 weeks!
  • Total weight gain: At my last appointment, my total gain was 20 lbs. Scary, but my blood pressure is great, so nothing to be worried about!
  • Maternity clothes? Oh yeah. They are SO comfy!
  • Stretch marks? Nope! I got this new oil that helps with skin elasticity and it smells like lavender. I am OBSESSED.
  • Sleep? It’s hit or miss. I sleep well until about 3:00 and then I can’t get back to sleep until 5:00-5:30 (I usually fall back asleep once my husband’s alarm goes off- kind of weird). It’s hard to get comfortable.
  • Rings on or off? Replacement set is still one!
  • Best moment this week?  I found out my mom and sister are coming to visit in a few weeks! I haven’t seen my sister since February so I’m excited to see her!
  • Cravings: MANGOS
  • Symptoms: Sciatic pain and CRAZY heartburn.
  • Nutrition? Also hit or miss. I’m making sure to be extra diligent this week since I have my Glucose Tolerance Test on Tuesday.
  • Workouts? I had a great few weeks at 3x a week but it’s getting hard to workout. I get uncomfortable really easily so I’ve had to dial it down which is a bummer.
  • Belly button in or out? In.
  • Looking forward to? Tuesday! After my dreaded test, we have another appointment to check Baby MAC’s progress. Also, August is the last month that we have as down time! We have a shower in September, a shower in October, and then she’s due in November!

That’s what’s going on this week! I’ve done some more things for the nursery so hopefully I’ll get that posted soon!

21 Week Bump Update! Family

affiliatelinkdisclaimer

I’m officially over half way through with pregnancy! Even if Baby MAC comes at 42 weeks (please, Jesus, NO), I’m halfway. The first trimester went by so slowly, but I feel like the past few weeks have flown by!  I can’t wait to see what the next few months have in store! Here’s this week’s bump update!

21weeks

  • How far along? 21 weeks!
  • Total weight gain:  I forgot to weigh again this morning… I’m going to guess maybe 15-16 pounds?
  • Maternity clothes? Still yes! I’m still living in maxi skirts and dresses for the work week. I do have some Old Navy linen pants and shorts that I’m loving. I love them because the top is a band like the band on yoga pants so, even though they’re maternity, I can fold the top down once I lose baby weight and wear them when I’m not pregnant. Win-win!
  • Stretch marks? None yet! I do use some cocoa butter and cocoa butter oil at night. The oil is supposed to keep skin from itching and I use cocoa butter because everyone else uses it and I feel like it can’t hurt anything! Even if it’s not preventing stretch marks, my skin is super soft!
  • Sleep? I don’t know why, but I have slept like a baby the past few nights. The only nights I didn’t sleep well this week were when we were on vacation (thanks a lot friend’s neighbors who set off mortars at 2:00 am). I used to take Ambien to sleep and then stopped taking it once I got pregnant. Luckily I slept because my body was so exhausted, but I started getting less sleep in the past month. Being up and down peeing all night kind of sucks. For whatever reason, though, this past week I’ve slept really well. I definitely don’t hate it!
  • Rings on or off? On, but it’s still a replacement set.  I also had to get a new replacement set. The other one had a couple stones fall out.
  • Best moment this week?  The past few days have been awesome. I’m starting to feel her move more and more so it’s really cool! She’s very active during the day and then settles down when I get home from work. It’s crazy to think that I feel her this much with a barrier (Anterior placenta) and her weighing less than a pound!
  • Cravings: None really. I am loving iced coffee though!
  • Symptoms: Still sciatic pain and acid reflux. Hooray! It’s also becoming increasingly hard to bend over.
  • Nutrition? I’m doing pretty well! Staying around my calorie goal each day, which is good!
  • Workouts? I’m up to working out 3x per week! Usually just cardio but sometimes I add in weights. I’ve also been doing a lot of nesting which should count as a workout because cleaning/organizing/decorating is hard work for a pregnant lady!
  • Belly button in or out? In.
  • Looking forward to? Tuesday! We have an appointment and we’ll be able to hear her heartbeat and chat with the doctor.

Overall, it’s been a pretty awesome week!

4th of July Weekend // Orlando! Life

affiliatelinkdisclaimer

I hope everyone had a fun and safe 4th of July weekend!

We went out of town to visit some friends in Orlando and we had so much fun! Both of us had Friday off of work, so we left on Friday morning.

On the way out of town, we stopped at a new-ish gas station near our house. Enmark has rebranded their gas station as EnMarket.  In addition to the normal gas station food you find anywhere, they had a ton of local and organic snack choices. They also had a restaurant with made to order sandwiches and pizzas. I was glad to see some better options! I had a bite of Mike’s chicken biscuit (which was SO good) but I stuck to my choices: a fruit cup and a Cookies and Cream Quest Bar. To be honest, I was shocked they had Quest Bars! I also got a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough bar for a snack.

The drive to Orlando wasn’t horrible. It’s about 4 1/2 hours. We got to our friends house and went to Downtown Disney for dinner. We went to Bongos and the food was amazing! I should have taken a picture (I ate it too fast). It’s a Cuban restaurant and they did Cuban food right, for the most part. Their chimichurri was different (red instead of green) but it was still really good!

Fun fact about Carrie: sweet plantains are one of my FAVORITE foods. Mike likes tostones (flattened and fried- savory) more  and I think he’s insane. Give me all the sweet plantains!

The next day, we spent the day by the pool. My friend Casey made a casserole for breakfast. I’m going to use the recipe she gave me and make some substitutions to make it a little healthier. She’s a pretty healthy eater in the first place, but we didn’t make any substitutions for the cheese. I may try Laughing Cow and see how it works! For lunch, her husband made some chicken (I think it was in a lime marinade?) and hot dogs. I had chicken and it was really good.

4th of July Pregnant

My Patriotic Baby Belly!

That night, we drove to another friend’s house in downtown Orlando for dinner and fireworks. We watched fireworks from the rooftop of her apartment and we were able to see the fireworks from all of the theme parks at the same time!

Sunday, we went to a restaurant called Yellow Dog Eats for lunch. Mike and I ate there a couple years ago on a drive down to Miami. We remembered it being amazing, so we decided to go back. It was AWESOME.

yellow dog eats orlando food

We both got the sandwich called “The Rufus.” It was pulled pork, a Carolina style barbecue sauce, raspberry sauce, brie cheese, some peppers that were savory and a little spicy, and I added bacon to mine. Mike added bacon and shoestring potatoes to his. Let me tell you something: this place is amazing. The food is incredible. Is it healthy? Hell no. But it is so worth it! The vibe of the place is great and we will make this a place we go whenever we are in Orlando.

After eating, we went back to the house, packed the car, and headed back home. Traffic was miserable, we got stuck in a hurricane (not literally, but it was raining so hard we couldn’t see out the window- 35mph with hazards on for almost 20 minutes), and we were told the power may have been out at our house. Luckily, the power was NOT out, and we made it home at 6:59- just in time to watch the U.S. Women’s National Team win the World Cup! Not a bad way to end the weekend!

Overall, we had a great weekend!

What did you do for 4th of July?

Date Night // Weekly Recap Life

It’s been one of the weirdest/best/worst weeks. Seriously!

The good:

First and foremost, we got to see our baby and we found out we are having a little girl!  Baby has a name, but we’re keeping it under wraps for now so I’ll just call her Baby MAC (her initials- NO, her name is not Mackenzie). It was so great to see her pretty face and to hear that she’s growing just as she should be.

Secondly, it was a short week at work! I had half of Monday off and I took Tuesday off (the reasoning is on the bad side, but more on that later). The week went by relatively fast, which was great because this coming week is also a short week due to the holiday weekend! Hooray for a sort-of Summer vacation.

Third, we finished painting Baby MAC’s nursery! It took a few days, but I LOVE how it turned out! I’ll post photos of her nursery once I get some uploaded. It’ll be fun to see how the process progresses!

Lastly, I had a great date night with my husband on Friday night. More on that later!

The bad:

Well, I stayed home from work because our home was damaged after a bad storm Monday night. It thunderstorms nearly every day where we live, but I have never seen a storm this bad. Luckily the damage wasn’t significant, but it was bad enough that I had to stay home to ensure it was repaired. Not fun at all.

Also, I have had increasingly bad back pain. Baby MAC thinks my sciatic nerve is super comfy because she loves to lean against it ALL DAY LONG. I worked out 3x this week (yay!) but the last two times were cut a little short due to back pain (boo). I think I’m going to see a chiropractor soon.

Now, about date night!

Mike and I went to a local restaurant called Fire Street Foods and it was delicious! I loved the vibe of the restaurant. It had a really clean design and felt really open and modern.

fire street food

I had been craving potstickers for weeks, so we got some as an appetizer.

fire street food

For an entree, I got pad thai. I ate about 1/4 of it. It was a huge portion! Mike got green curry which was delicious! I’m going to get yellow curry next time.

I’m hoping to be able to keep up with working out 3 times a week. Even if it’s only 30 minutes, it’s still getting my heart rate up and keeping me active!

18 Week Bump Update // Thoughts on Weight Gain Family

Happy hump day!

Across the internet, there’s a “thing” for pregnant women called “Hump Day Bump Day.” Wednesdays are the days pregnant ladies post their bump photos. Wednesday also happens to be the day that my weeks start over! Now that I’m almost halfway through pregnancy (what?!), I want to start participating in Hump Day Bump Day (HDBD) on the blog. I’ll also use it as a weekly update to let yall in on what’s been going on with me in general! Here’s this week’s bump update!

How far along? 18 weeks!

Total weight gain: 13 pounds (I don’t even want to talk about it– but I will below)

Maternity clothes? Yep! Maternity pants are super comfy. I have mostly been wearing a lot of maxi skirts and dresses which haven’t been maternity, though.

Stretch marks? None yet!

Sleep? I’m functioning off less sleep than I was in the first trimester, which is great. Sleep is tough, though. Between sciatic nerve pain and needing to use the bathroom 2-4x a night, my sleep is interrupted.

Rings on or off? On, but it’s a replacement set. My hands are the only things on my body that swell right now. I’m pretty sure it’s the heat.

Best moment this week?  Yesterday! We heard the baby’s heartbeat again. It was strong and high due to a lot of movement. This baby is very active in the morning!

Cravings: None really. I’m glad my food aversions have gone away. I’m more the type to really want something that is mentioned rather than crave something random. Usually that feeling goes away after a little while!

Symptoms: Back pain is my biggest symptom right now. If I walk/stand for a long time my lower back starts to hurt and I get pretty nasty sciatic pain at the end of the day. I also have some pretty killer acid reflux. Hooray!

Nutrition? Definitely could be better! That’s something at the top of my list between now and my next appointment.

Workouts? I’m working out 2-3x per week. Mostly 2x a week but last week I hit 3x and it felt good so I’m thinking I’ll be able to continue with that. I mostly do cardio but I’ve also started to include some light weight training.

Belly button in or out? In.

Looking forward to? Next Monday! We found out if Baby C is a boy or a girl!

Now. The big weight gain talk.

Pregnancy is so different for every person. My OB says “Some girls eat like pigs and don’t gain anything while others eat like fleas and gain a lot.” I’m somewhere in the middle as far as eating goes, but I’ve gained 13 pounds in 18 weeks. At my last appointment, my doctor wasn’t overly concerned but it was something she mentioned to keep an eye on so I’m making that a priority for the next month or so. Weight gain up to about 35 pounds is healthy for a pregnancy but my weight can’t continue to increase at this rate.

It is really hard to see the scale go up after losing a lot of weight. When you are mentally used to see the scale decrease, any increase is hard, much less a pound a week. It has been a big adjustment, but I am focusing on the fact that our baby is healthy. As long as our baby is healthy, I’ll be ok seeing the scale go up.

My Favorite Things // February Life

affiliatelinkdisclaimer

I cannot believe that February is almost over! I feel like it was just New Years and here we are, almost into March. February is always such a sweet month and there were so many awesome things that I did and tried.

After reflecting on the month, I realized that I’ve sort of forgotten all of the great things from previous months. Because of that, I wanted to start a new segment on the blog that highlights some of my favorite things each month. I think it will be a good way to reflect on the positive things from the month and it will also give me a chance to share about new products (or old products) that I used and loved!

I already have lists of my favorite things (accessories, apparel, and supplements), but I think doing it monthly and expanding on why things were my favorite will be really fun!

Each month will consist of 3 parts:

Favorite Thing
Favorite Moment
Favorite Food

So, right now, let’s start with February Favorites!

favorites

Favorite Thing| Quest Nutrition Products

While Quest bars are usually always on my favorite things list, they were especially useful this month. With all the traveling I did, I really depended on Quest products to keep me on track. For example, I traveled from 3:00 until about 8:00 on my way to New York and I never had time to get something to eat. It would have been really easy to grab some chips from the airport, but I packed some Quest bars and some Quest chips so I didn’t have to be limited to whatever the convenience stores had. I got enough protein to keep me full until I was able to get a late dinner (it was 10:00 before I ate!) and I was able to “cheat clean” as Quest likes to say. +1 for Quest bars in February!

Favorite Moment| New York City

It’s no surprise that my favorite moment of February was traveling to New York City for Valentine’s day. The view from our place was amazing, I got to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, I ate amazing food from Shake Shack, Carlos Bakery, and Katz Deli, and I got my picture taken by Humans of New York at the Met. It was such an amazing trip! I had been to New York twice before this trip, but this was the first time I went that I was able to explore the city on my own terms and I really fell in love with the city during this trip. I can’t wait to go back (in the spring or summer time) and see more!

Favorite Food| Eggs Benedict

February was the month of the eggs benedict. Nearly every time we went to brunch, I got eggs benedict. Something about it just makes my heart really happy. It’s such a comfort food. I also ate the best eggs benedict I’ve ever had this month. North Beach Bar and Grill on Tybee Island, Ga added smoked salmon to their benedict and took away the bread. SO good.

Overall, I’d have to say February was an amazing month. Hopefully March follow suit!

A Little More About Carrie… Life

After a month of blogging and a feature on Humans of New York, I feel like it’s time for me to share a little more about me.

I don’t want to write a biography because that’s boring, so I thought I would put together a little list of things about me!

biography

  1. I grew up in Northern California
  2. I have 2 younger sisters!
  3. I live in Savannah, Ga with my husband and 2 fur babies
  4. We’ve been married for almost 3 years.
  5. I battled anorexia from age 8 to age 16.
  6. From age 16 to age 20 I battled with binge eating.

  8. I had a membership to a gym on campus but I paid for a gym off campus because that’s what I was comfortable with.
  9. I used MyFitnessPal to track my food.
  10. I ran. A LOT.
  11. My official starting weight in March 2011 was 163 lbs.
  12. I weighed 115 lbs in November of 2011.
  13. Over the next couple of years I gained back a lot of that weight due to losing it so quickly.
  14. After gaining back some of what I lost, I realized I needed to live healthy instead of aim for skinny.
  15. Now I maintain around 130 and I don’t stress!
  16. I’m no longer classified as pre-diabetes

  27. I love to travel but I get really anxious about going places I haven’t been (SPOILER ALERT: I do it anyway).
  28. I still watch WWE (not even ashamed).
  29. Law and Order SVU and Criminal Minds are my go-to binge watching shows.
  30. I’ve seen every X-Men movie in theaters on opening weekend.

I tell yall this because I really am just a normal person who was obese, worked hard, and got healthy. When I say anyone can do it if I can do it, I really mean it! I wouldn’t sit in a gym parking lot, much less work out in a gym. I was able to change my life around and I sincerely hope I can motivate you as you live healthy with me!

Eating Light at a Sunday Beach Brunch Fitness / Life

After a Saturday filled with yard work and house chores, Mike and I decided to head to the beach for brunch on this morning. We live about 30 minutes from Tybee Island, though we don’t go there as often as we probably should. I want to make a point to go the beach more often this year. It was 70 degrees and it was the perfect weather for a beach front brunch.

The drive there was great. No traffic and just warm enough to let the windows down.

reflection-1wm

We went to a little restaurant called North Beach Bar and Grill. It’s a small place (with surprisingly adequate seating) in a more residential area of the island and it is walking distance to a public dock that goes right to the beach. Usually they serve burgers and seafood, but on Sunday mornings they serve brunch. The menu was small but everything looked amazing.

menu-1wm

Eating light at brunch isn’t always easy, but I made it a priority to find a wholesome meal. I ordered the Smoked Salmon benedict. It came with smoked salmon, sliced tomatoes, bacon, poached eggs, chive hollandaise, and home fries (a hash). Mike ordered the Jamaican French Toast which was two HUGE pieces of  Challah bread made like french toast. Mike and I also split an order of their gorgonzola grits. The smoked salmon benedict was seriously one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. It was perfect. The salmon brought the perfect amount of savory to the whole dish and I also liked that there wasn’t an overload of hollandaise.

When looking at the menu and trying to get something lighter, I made sure to stay away from things with bread. Bread is delicious and  I DO eat bread, but I will avoid it if I can. I picked this dish because of the insane amount of protein in it. Eggs and salmon and bacon? That is a LOT of protein. It definitely kept me full during the day.

foodwm

Eating out doesn’t have to be a bummer! Pick something high in protein and enjoy yourself. If you really want to try something that you can’t find anywhere else (like the gorgonzola grits) get an order of it and share!

After brunch, Mike and I took a walk on the beach and enjoyed the weather.

Yoga and a Deconstructed Key Lime Pie Fitness

This week has gone by so quickly!

I go to work later than usual on Wednesdays, so I use Wednesdays to sleep in a little and still get in a good workout. This Wednesday, I was up at 6:00 and at the gym around 6:30. I worked shoulders and triceps. I was really excited that I increased my weight for shoulder press.  thumbs up animated GIF

After lifting, I did 25 minutes on the elliptical. I try to avoid the elliptical, but I didn’t want to run and my week-day gym doesn’t have a working stairclimber. Instead, I put the elliptical on 10/10 incline and 8/10 resistance and watched a little bit of a Lifetime movie on Netflix.

I forgot to pack a lunch Wednesday so I went to Kroger to see what I could find. Y’all, this Kroger is insane. I’m talking has a jewelry store and a shoe section insane. It’s the biggest grocery store that wasn’t a Walmart that I have ever been in. I was going to get sushi but I noticed they had a salad bar, so I got that instead!
salad

Whenever I get a salad, I always make sure to add a good amount of protein to fill me up. On this salad, I got chicken and half a hard boiled egg-white as my protein.

On Thursday, I decided to take a rest day. I was pretty tired and I needed the extra sleep so I woke up at 6:30 and got ready for work. I went to Whole Foods for lunch. I love the salad bar at Whole Foods! It’s not too expensive either, as long as you pay attention to the weight of your salad as you go. I also picked up 2 macarons as a treat. I got one salted caramel and one raspberry.

image
(this looks kind of gross, but it was awesome. Their Herb Ranch is SO damn good)

Last night for dessert, I made an awesome little key lime pie dessert out of graham crackers and key lime greek yogurt.

key lime pie I froze the greek yogurt (I used Oikos) during the day. Then I crushed up 2 graham crackers, added a teaspoon of butter and stuck it in the microwave for 30 seconds. I stirred up the butter and crackers so it got mixed together well to make a “crust.”  Then I put the frozen yogurt in the bowl with the “crust” and ate it. It was SO freaking good and pretty good for you too!

After dessert and a few episodes of Friends, I did some yoga in our spare room. I want to start doing yoga more. I really like doing it, but I get stuck because I don’t know what to do! I need to go to a yoga class at the gym sometime soon.

Do you do yoga? How did you get into it?

5 Exercises to Work Your Legs! Fitness

Everyone loves new workouts!

On Monday, I worked biceps. I’ll make sure to go into more detail about my bicep exercises another day. I don’t have very prominent bicep peaks and, while peaks are genetic, I’m trying to improve them the best I can!

bicep workout

Yesterday was a busy day! I started out at the gym, per usual. I worked legs (my favorite day!) and was able to increase my squat and deadlift weight (yay!). When making up a routine in the gym, I make sure to work things that I know will not just look good (ie. the booty) but also things that will help me in other areas. Sure my hamstrings will look good, but strengthening my glutes and hammies will also help me when I run. I have an IT band issue and strengthening my glutes is one of the best ways to help heal that and keep it from being a consistent bother when I run.

leg exercises

In order to get a good workout in in a good amount of time, I added a super set to the end of my workout to make sure my heart rate stayed up! It’s easy to get stuck sometimes at the gym. Sometimes you just kind of look around thinking “What do I do next?”

Well, here’s a workout to put in the holster for next time! There are 5 exercises to work your legs and these are the exercises I do, for the most part.  I’ve really seen a difference in building my glutes, quads, and hamstrings doing these exercises!
